48 Hills is a brand new kind of summer camp geared at Bay Area teens interested in filmmaking and storytelling. Below is some further information about the program as well as some recent press!Â
We're currently accepting applications for interested students and are looking to get the word out to any young people who want to take their craft or interest in film making to the next level.
WHAT IS 48 HILLS? Â
48 HILLS, 24 FRAMES  is a whole new kind of film camp.  Over three weeks this summer (June 16 - July 3), join director JOE TALBOT and the creative minds behind THE LAST BLACK MAN IN SAN FRANCISCO for a masterclass in how to make a great San Francisco movie. Â
Students will be taught the technical aspects of filmmaking by some of the most sought out artists in their fields, including OSCAR-NOMINATED COMPOSER EMILE MOSSERI and cinematographer ADAM NEWPORT-BERRA, fresh off of having shot KENDRICK LAMAR'S SUPER BOWL SHOW
Under their tutelage, the class will create a short film that will premiere at the historic ROXIE THEATER with friends and family encouraged to attend and celebrate But what will make 48 HILLS truly unique is that it will teach students how to mine our beloved city—a bountiful resource for creativity—in order to mount a film set here.
 WHO IS RUNNING 48 HILLS?Â
Our staff includes Sundance winners, Oscar-nominated artists, A24 staffers, beloved local historians and more.
JOEÂ TALBOT
Before Joe won BEST DIRECTOR at the SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL and directed a music video for ADELE that she refers to as the favorite she’s made, Joe was a woefully lost 20-something who didn’t know how to transform all the feelings he felt about San Francisco into a movie. While transcribing interviews for his father’s book that would become SEASON OF THE WITCH, Joe fell in love with the history of the city, which provided him a deeper historical context for how to think about his hometown. Living in, and loving, San Francisco can be a sometimes painful endeavor—Joe believes that finding new ways to tackle the city creatively is an essential element of battling the cynicism that can creep into our San Francisco hearts
JIMMIE FAILS
You can catch Jimmie Fails in one of this years buzziest, Oscar-nominated films, NICKELBOYS. But Jimmie’s path to film wasn’t always predestined—in order to star in LAST BLACK MAN across from veterans like Danny Glover and Mike Epps, Jimmie honed skills as a first time actor he’s excited to teach to the first class of 48 HILLS that involve pulling from lived experiences. Jimmie will teach our up and coming actors how to access the vulnerability required to take inspiration from your own life and create a safe environment for exploration with friends turned collaborators
ADAM NEWPORT BERRA
Adam came up shooting skate videos in rural Oregon en route to becoming one of the most prolific cinematographers of his generation. Since shooting LAST BLACK MAN, Adam has shot THE BEAR, EUPHORIA and has become the go-to DP for KENDRICK LAMAR. As pretty as his images are, Adam believes firmly in story motivating camera and will help teach the importance of narrative-based cinematography and dynamic shot construction.
EMILE MOSSERI
Emile burst onto the scene with his score for LAST BLACK MAN, for which he received an unusual amount of love and attention as a first-time composer. By his second film, Emile had already been nominated for an Oscar. He’s since worked with Jonah Hill and Jesse Eisenberg, but part of Emile’s continued success stems from an open-heartedness he brings to collaboration, perhaps the result of being in a band with childhood friends for more than half his life—when you’re sharing a small touring van with four people, you learn how to resolve your problems (mostly) amicably. Writing music for a film requires an interesting blend of investment and humility — your music has to serve the film. Emile will teach young composers how to best serve the films their music will bolster and directors, who may not be intuitively musical, how to communicate their ideas to a composer.
